Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive ailment caused by a neurodegenerative disorder that effects movement, muscle control, and balance, as well as several other motor and non-motor functions. The disease is chronic and progressive, meaning there is no cure and the symptoms will continue to worsen over time.

Due to the overlap of symptoms with PD and other Parkinsonian syndromes (progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple system atrophy, corticobasal degeneration, and vascular Parkinsonism), many are not diagnosed properly. Making an accurate diagnosis between PD and related syndromes, particularly in its early stages, is difficult and there is no standard objective test.

As patients are accurately diagnosed earlier in the disease progression, treatment can delay motor symptom onset which will increase both life expectancy and quality of life. Furthermore, objectively tracking disease progression will enable physicians to provide patients with the help needed to make the most of each disease stage.
