Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, which describes a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Several studies have demonstrated that cognitive changes start long before symptoms manifest themselves. Individuals with AD experience multiple symptoms that change over a period of years and reflect the degree of damage to neurons in different parts of the brain.

A quick, definitive diagnosis would enable patients to start drug treatments earlier, participate in clinical trials for experimental medicines, and plan for their futures. If a test came back negative, the physician would be able to look for other causes of memory lapses.
